U.S. Kids World Golf Championships

US Kids Golf

Each year since 2005, Pinehurst and the surrounding community have played host to thousands of junior golfers from across the globe. The US Kids Golf World Championships are here in town with the finals tomorrow so it’s not too late to scoot out to watch these little ones play some great golf!

U.S. Kids Golf offers tournament golf to kids 6-18 years old. With COVID, there have been so many cancellations and postponements of most kid's sports, from basketball to soccer to Little League baseball. But with golf pretty much open around the country, it has been so much fun to see the “little ones” playing in town over the last few weeks.

What I love most about the US Kid’s Golf Tour (there is also a US Kid’s Golf Academy that I will write about in a future blog) is that it helps parents who would love to introduce their kids to the sport, but have the question “Where do I start ?”.

U.S. Kids Golf offers all the resources a parent needs to introduce the game to the beginning golfer even if the parent has never golfed. The mission of US Kid’s Golf is for the child to have fun learning the lifelong game of golf and to encourage family interaction which builds lifelong memories. US Kids Golf also tries to make it affordable which is often a reason kids don’t get a chance to play the sport.

The World Championships

They say this tournament held between July 22nd and August 2nd, is so much more than a Golf Tournament. How do these kids get there? Players ages 5 to 14 from around the world are eligible to compete in Local Tours, one-day events that are close to home and are designed to integrate young players into competitive golf.

After a player competes and earns Priority Status, they will be eligible for multi-day tournaments such as State Invitationals and Regional Championships. Then it is on to the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS!  Every summer, nearly 600 players, ages 13 to 18, compete in the World Teen Championship. A week later, the famed Pinehurst Resort, and other surrounding golf courses, host over 1500 of the world’s top 5 to 12-year-old golfers during the pinnacle event for the U.S. Kids Golf, the World Championship.

The weeklong experience includes multiple Parent/Child Tournaments and three rounds of championship play. Following the three-day tournament is the Van Horn Cup a one-day best ball tournament featuring the top twelve-year-olds from the US squaring off against the top 12-year-olds from the rest of the world playing on the famous Pinehurst # 2. That is happening tomorrow so if you don’t have anything on your schedule, make sure to go and watch! This is one of my favorite videos of kids at the World Championships.

At U.S. Kids Golf

... their top priority is the safety of the players, families, staff, volunteers, and coaches. As a result, they continue to closely monitor the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and other health organizations for their protocols regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) and its impact on the competition. It was so nice to see all of the players and the families at Pinehurst Country Club practicing safety measures.

Parent-Child Championships

One of my other favorite things about US Kid’s Golf is the Parent-Child tournaments. Parent/Child events are a great reflection of their mission –  to help kids have fun learning the lifelong game of golf and to encourage family interaction that builds lasting memories. Not only do these events provide an opportunity for kids to grow their passion for the game, but they also provide more quality time spent with kids and their parents on the course. Parent/Child events use a variety of formats including best ball and scrambles. Some events include other contests such as closest to the pin, long drives, and more! I love this video of this year’s Parent-Child Winners.

So, if you happen to be in Pinehurst this weekend, go check out at US KIDS WORLD GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS tomorrow, or plan on coming back next year with your kids! I would be happy to help you find a great place to stay while you are here so you and your kids can keep building those GREAT family memories!

If you decide to move here as you know McDevitt Town and Country Properties would love to help you and your family find that perfect golf property! We may even play a round or two along the way!
