Pinehurst #4 on The 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July from Pinehurst #4!

Here is hoping you and your family are having the best of times on The 4th of July! What better way to celebrate the 4th than playing golf with family or friends? And there is not a better golf course to celebrate the 4th than Pinehurst Country Club’s #4. ”4 on the 4th!”

The Best New Course to Play in 2018

#4 was originally a 1919 Donald Ross design that Tom Fazio redid in 2000. However, Bob Dedman, Pinehurst’s owner and CEO, announced in 2016 that this course would be redone once again by Gil Hanse.

Gil would also design a “short course” at Pinehurst called The Cradle (I will write all about that in a future blog). The #4 project began in the fall of 2017 and was completed 12 months later. I was one of the lucky ones to get to play in on its “reopening day” in 2018. Since then I have played it MANY times and it continues to be one of my favorite courses at Pinehurst. What I love BEST is the “Vista’s”. With the most interesting topography on the entire Pinehurst property, a shimmering lake as a centerpiece, and natural ridgelines defining corridors, golfers are treated to a brazen blend of sand, native wire grasses, and shimmering water. The views are amazing from almost everywhere!

Is #4 as Hard as #2?

Normally a newly remodeled layout like Pinehurst No. 4 would need seasoning and study before anyone would declare it to be a great golf course. But thanks to the kingmakers at the United States Golf Association, the two-year-old Gil Hanse redesign has been declared the equivalent of the resort’s storied championship venue, Pinehurst No. 2. I think it may be harder! It plays longer for SURE. Golf Digest named it the “BEST New Public Course” in 2019″.
The elevation changes and the exceptional use of sandy, wooded, and lakefront property into each hole design set apart Pinehurst No. 4. No. 4 is much more undulating than famed No. 2. Wonderful green complexes that, at times, feel like they’re perched on top of mountains. I don’t think there are views anywhere like it in the Sandhills area! I promise you will enjoy it, although be prepared for a very challenging day of golf!

Check out this video of me and my friends playing #4.

So, if you are looking for a FUN way to celebrate The 4th of July or if you just want to enjoy one of the BEST new golf courses in America, schedule a visit to Pinehurst to play Pinehurst #4! Of course, you can play #1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9, too! So much golf here in Pinehurst! Happy 4th!
